CAPE TOWN (Reuters) - South Africa's Koeberg nuclear station, Africa's only nuclear-fired power station, was shut down for the second time in a week on Wednesday after a bush fire affected one of the transimission lines.
'It was caused as a result of a rather large veld (bush) fire ... the fire caused the line to become ironised resulting in a massive voltage drop. The station has shut down again as it is designed to do,' spokeswoman Karen de Villiers told Reuters.
Parts of Cape Town, including parliament, were briefly left without electricity, before power was restored from coal fired stations to the north. The Western Cape province has been battling bush fires, which have destroyed vast tracts of land.
The fire which affected the 400 kilovolt transmission line was some 80 km (50 miles) north of Koeberg. De Villiers said it would take a couple of day to get Koeberg up and running again.
Last Friday, large parts of the Western Cape province including Cape Town were plunged into chaos after one of Koeberg's two French-built reactors tripped, causing the station to shut.
The other unit was down due to planned repairs and will only restart early next month.
Some analysts said the breakdowns at Koeberg and frequent power failures in other parts of South Africa suggested that the country's generation capacity was already running out.
Demand for electricity in Africa's largest economy is expected to exceed current supply by 2007.
The government is looking at additional so"
